According to a popular outlet, the former mayor of New York City, billionaire Michael Bloomberg, has donated $50 million to the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris. The money has been received through a nonprofit organization that is helping the Vice President’s campaign. The organization to which the donation has been made is not required to list its donors publicly. It has reportedly received a similar amount from Microsoft founder billionaire Bill Gates and other billionaires.
The New York Times reported that four people who knew the matter confirmed to the outlet that the self-described “data nerd” Bloomberg had donated $50 million to Future Forward USA Action, the dark money vehicle of Kamala Harris’s main super PAC called Future Forward.
Billionaire Bloomberg was also reportedly pressured to donate to the campaign by his billionaire friends, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Two people who were briefed about the conversation said that Bloomberg had a private conversation with Kamala Harris.
The 82-year-old former mayor of New York City registered as a Democrat in 2018. He has also contributed millions to Democratic party campaigns in the past, but this contribution was made in October, weeks before the election. In early contributions, he has made donations as late as August.
Michael Bloomberg has been somewhat frosty with his earlier rival, President Joe Biden, although he has donated several millions to the Democrats, especially during the midterms.
According to the NYT, he met Harris’ economic team at his company’s headquarters a few weeks ago. The much-respected Bloomberg titan then spoke with Kamala Harris. Following this, Michael Bloomberg reportedly cut a cheque for $50 million to Future Forward USA Action for her presidential campaign.
