20 months after President Joe Biden’s nomination, former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti was finally approved by a divided vote in the U.S. Senate to serve as the country’s ambassador to India. The former Los Angeles mayor’s nomination was put forward for a final confirmation vote after the chamber decided to end a filibuster on it earlier in the day.
Garcetti, who was confirmed in a roll call vote of 52-42, was nominated in July 2021, but it took the Senate months to act on his candidacy due to rumors that he knew or ought to have known about allegations of sexual assault and harassment made by a former top staffer to the then-mayor.
The longstanding politician now has the chance to restart his career abroad thanks to the U.S. Senate’s 52-42 approval, even though the emotional damage from the harassment claims that have haunted his office is still very much present.
The Los Angeles police officer who filed the lawsuit claims that Garcetti advisor Rick Jacobs touched him and made obscene sexual comments about him. The case will go to trial later this year. Garcetti has stated he did not observe the harassing behavior, contrary to what the officer claims he saw, and the advisor denies bothering anyone.
Other former Garcetti employees have accused one another in depositions and public interviews of failing to report Jacobs’ alleged wrongdoing or of fabricating what they saw. Each other has been accused of leaking information to the media.
“The United States-India relationship is extremely important, and it’s a very good thing we now have an ambassador,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said.
