Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was recently sent to jail after he was accused of witness tampering and more. On Tuesday, his lawyers said that he was unable to adequately prepare for his trial that is expected to begin in early October. They claimed that he did not have proper access to computers nor was he getting the proper medications he needed to concentrate on his defense. They also said that his diet was inadequate. Sam Bankman-Fried is facing criminal charges after the collapse of FTX last November and has pleaded not guilty.
Earlier this month, Judge Lewis Kaplan revoked his $250 million bail, more than a week ago after Bankman-Fried tried to influence and tamper with witnesses before his trial. In January, he tried to communicate with the FTX general counsel. Months later, Sam Bankman-Fried selectively leaked private writings of his former girlfriend to a journalist.
Judge Kaplan said that those writings were such that a romantic partner would most likely not share them with anyone “except to hurt, discredit, and frighten the subject of the material.”
Once considered a wonder kid, Sam Bankman-Fried made an appearance in a dull beige prison uniform. He shuffled into the Manhattan court with his legs shackled.
Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn was the presiding judge over the hearing on Tuesday. Sam Bankman-Fried’s attorney Mark Cohen told the judge that the former FTX CEO had not received medications that were essential for him to focus after he was sent to jail on August 12.
Cohen also said that Bankman-Fried was served a “flesh diet” and had to subsist on bread and water and sometimes peanut butter. He called this “outrageous” and said that it had to be “remedied.”
Another lawyer for the defense Christian Everdell told the judge that Sam Bankman-Fried could not make adequate preparations for the trial as he was unable to review millions of evidence documents for only two days in a week.
Magistrate Judge Sarah Newburn said that she would not overrule the previous ruling of Judge Kaplan on the access of computers. However, she said that she would see that Sam Bankman-Fried received medications and a diet that aligned with his vegan preferences; at the Metropolitan Detention Center, in Brooklyn, New York City.
