Following House antisemitic testimony, UPenn loses a $100 million contribution. Alongside Claudine Gay and Sally Kornbluth, the presidents of MIT and Harvard, Ms. Magill made an appearance in the House of Representatives.
Republican Elise Stefanik, a congresswoman from New York, questioned them, saying, “Does advocating for the extermination of Jews go against [your university’s] code of conduct or policies surrounding bullying and harassment? “Yes or no?”
Rather than providing a yes or no response, Ms. Magill and her colleagues from MIT and Harvard stated that it depended on the “context” in different ways.
Magill’s resignation was demanded by a significant benefactor, who also threatened to withhold shares from her, costing the university $100 million.
In a letter to Penn on Thursday, Wall Street CEO Ross Stevens threatened to take actions that will cost the Ivy League university over $100 million if Magill continues as president. Former Penn student Stevens, the CEO of Stone Ridge Holdings, claims he has good reason to revoke Penn’s existing ownership stake of $100 million in his company’s shares. He explicitly brings up Magill’s appalling testimony this week before Congress.
