On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested a group of suspects after stopping an SUV. The officials found large bags filled with Nike sneakers. Six people were arrested but their identities have not been disclosed as the case is still under investigation. On Thursday, authorities arrested Ivan Issac Ramirez as the first suspect in the Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) “flash mob” burglary.
The Nike robbery was one among several daylight burglaries that have been taking place these past weeks across many locations in Southern California. The Yves Saint Laurent burglary took place at a shopping center in Glendale.
Glendale Police Department issued a press release stating that 23-year-old Los Angeles resident Ivan Issac Ramirez has been arrested. According to the authorities, he was booked for the following charges: organized retail theft, burglary, grand theft, and conspiracy.
Another warrant has also been issued by the police for 21-year-old Brianna Jimenez. She is also a resident of Los Angeles.
Ramirez has been hospitalized as he faces health issues. He is expected to appear in Glendale Superior Court on September 15.
Glendale Police Chief Manuel Cid said, “I assure all members of the Glendale community and the broader Los Angeles region that these brazen smash-and-grab robberies and burglaries will not be tolerated. This marks the first arrest related to this crime and there are more arrests to come.”
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said that it had constituted an Organized Retail Crime Task Force. This task force will investigate the recent burglaries and robberies that have been undertaken by flash mobs and others.
In the past flash mobs used to entertain shoppers at malls or bring a smile to tired and weary travelers on public transport service stations and more. Now, these flash mobs are more a smash and grab operation by burglars and thieves and have both frustrated and frightened shoppers in the nation.
