Charlene Curtis, the first Black women’s basketball head coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference, died of cancer. She was 67.

The ACC said Curtis died on Thursday.

“Charlene was a pioneer in the sport of women’s basketball, but more importantly, she was an amazing individual,” ACC commissioner Jim Phillips said in a news release. “Her kindness and class resonated throughout her life, and she will be missed by all who were fortunate to know her and her inspiring spirit.”

Curtis was the head coach at Wake Forest from 1997-2004, compiling a 67-129 record. She earlier had head-coaching stints at Radford and Temple and had a 229-279 record in 17 seasons.

Curtis also was the first Black player to suit up for the Radford women’s basketball team from 1972-76 and was the first 1,000-point scorer for the school — male or female.

She went 121-53 as Radford’s coach from 1984-90 and was inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame in 1995.

Curtis went 41-97 in five seasons (1990-95) at Temple.

Curtis served as ACC’s supervisor of officials from 2008-19.
