On Sunday, Finns begin casting their votes for a new Prime Minister to lead the Nordic country. The 37-year-old Prime Minister, Sanna Marin is still popular among Finns but the forecast is that her party will face a tough time to gain a majority. Pollsters say that no party is expected to gain a decisive lead in Finland. The party that wins on Sunday will be given the first attempt to form a government.
Sanna Marin leads a left-wing party that has faced some antagonism among voters for its generous public services during a time of economic turmoil. Although the 37-year-old millennial is popular among many of the younger Finns, conservatives have been upset with what they consider as enormous spendings on education and pensions and these issues are expected to erode her support.
Three parties are in the election fray and all of them are predicted to win around a maximum of about 20 percent of ballots. This would make them reliant on support from smaller parties in Finland. The major parties include the following:
Social Democrats
National Coalition Party
Finns Party.
Each party has its own main agenda that appeals to a section of the voters.

The National Coalition has said that it would curtail spending. It would also decrease public debt which has risen to over 70 percent of the GDP since 2019, when Marin became the Prime Minister.
The Finns Party also speaks of curbing spending but is concentrating on what leader Riikka Pura termed as “harmful” immigration of people who come to Finland from countries outside the European Union.
Marin’s Social Democrats say that economic growth is the way forward to decrease the increase in public debt. The party would prefer to consider raising taxes before cutting spending.
The Social Democrats led by Marin, together with President Sauli Niinisto, have almost completed the process of joining NATO after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Helsinki is expected to join the Western defense alliance within days.
