SC Paderborn 07’s Jonas “Jonny” Wirth beat RB Leipzig’s Levy Finn “Levyfinn” Rieck 5-2 to win the EA Sports FC eChampions League title in London on Wednesday.
In a rematch of the virtual Bundesliga final from earlier this year that Jonny won 8-1, he once again got the better of Levy. But this time it wasn’t nearly as convincing.
Levy jumped ahead 1-0 in the 29th minute. Five minutes later, Jonny lofted a shot over Levy’s keeper to tie the score.
But Levy retook the lead in the 42nd minute, putting in a rebound from close range. Jonny tied it again five minutes later, this time off a corner kick that was deflected in.
Jonny pulled away from there. After taking a 3-2 lead, he all but clinched the title and his share of the $280,000 in prize money in the 65th minute. He juked Levy’s goalkeeper to push the advantage to 4-2. Jonny put the finishing touches on the comeback victory with some pinpoint passing that led to his fifth goal in the 69th minute.
From February to April, competitors in FC Pro Leagues battled for a berth in the eChampions League group stage. Players represented clubs from leagues such as the ePremier League, Virtual Bundesliga and eLigue 1, and they advanced to the group stage by performing well domestically.
Those who made it past the group stage competed in the May 18-19 knockout stage, where the top 24 players faced off in a single-elimination tournament. Sixteen players were eliminated, and the top eight got a chance to go to the eChampions League Finals.
