Portugal’s Joao “jafonsogv” Vasconcelos won the grand final of the EA Sports FC event at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.
In the grand final, Vasconcelos posted a 6-2 win over Brazil’s Gabriel “Young” Freitas, taking home $300,000 and 1,000 Esports World Cup club points.
Vasconcelos defeated the Netherlands’ Manuel “ManuBachoore” Bachoore 6-2 in the quarterfinals on Sunday, then edged Paulo “PHzin” Chaves of Brazil 7-6 in the semifinals.
Freitas reached the grand final with a 9-4 quarterfinal win over Anders “Vejrgang” Vejrgang of the Netherlands and a 7-2 semifinal victory over Saudi Arabia’s Ahmad “AbuMakkah” Mujahid.
In the other two quarterfinal matches, Chaves blanked Australia’s Mark “Mark11” Zakhary 5-0 and Mujahid shut out Argentina’s Nicolas “nicolas99fc” Villalba 8-0 to reach the semifinals.
Sixteen players participated in the group stage, which featured two groups of eight players competing in round-robin action. The top three players from each group went right to the playoffs, the fourth- through sixth-place players duked it out in the resurrection stage and the bottom two players were eliminated from the tournament.
