FDA warns consumers not to purchase or use certain eye drops from several major brands due to the risk of eye infection

CVS

The FDA has issued a warning to consumers, advising them against purchasing and immediately discontinuing the use of twenty-six over-the-counter eye drop products. This caution arises from the potential risk of eye infections, which could result in partial vision loss or even blindness. If individuals experience any signs or symptoms of an eye infection after using these products, they should promptly consult their healthcare provider or seek immediate medical attention. These products are available under the following brand names:

  1. CVS Health (CVS)
  2. Leader (Cardinal Health)
  3. Rugby (Cardinal Health)
  4. Rite Aid
  5. Target Up&Up (TGT)
  6. Velocity Pharma

It’s important to note that these products are intended to be sterile. Ophthalmic drug products carry an elevated risk of harm to users because drugs applied to the eyes bypass certain natural defense mechanisms in the body.

Organic Greek Vitamin Bottles and Multivitamin Gummies

On October 25, 2023, the FDA recommended that the manufacturer of these products initiate a recall of all lots. This decision followed findings by FDA investigators, who identified unsanitary conditions in the manufacturing facility and detected positive bacterial test results during environmental sampling of crucial drug production areas within the facility. The FDA further advises consumers to properly dispose of these products.

Retailers such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Target are taking steps to remove these products from their store shelves and online platforms. However, products branded as Leader, Rugby, and Velocity may still be available for purchase in stores and online, and consumers are strongly discouraged from acquiring them.

The full list is available on the FDA website, here.
