Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao woke early on Thursday morning to more woes as the FBI knocked at the door of her home in the Lincoln Highlands neighborhood. They had a search warrant, and agents reportedly escorted her out. Later, other officials took away several boxes of paperwork and bags. The visit from the federal agency comes days after a campaign to recall her gained sufficient signatures.
The FBI’s San Francisco office released a statement that confirmed the agency had conducted a “court-authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane” and more. The Justice Department also confirmed that the FBI had visited Mayor Thao’s home but did not provide further comment. Officers from the IRS and the United States Postal Service were reportedly present at the mayor’s home.
The FBI also conducted another raid three miles away. Agents used a second search warrant to search a house on View Crest Court in Oakland Hills. This home is connected to Andy Duong. The Duong family owns and manages California Waste Solutions.
The FBI reportedly raided other locations, including California Waste Solutions at Embarcadero and David and Linda Duong’s home on Skyline Blvd.
The Oaklandside website has reported that many members of the City Council received campaign contributions allegedly linked to a contractor named California Waste Solutions in lieu of an anticipated favorable land deal and legal decision.
Mayor Sheng Thao was expected to attend an event on Thursday, but it was canceled, and she has not appeared in public. She and her office have not responded to requests for comment.
The FBI raid is one of the significant problems Oakland Mayor Thao faces. A campaign to recall her has successfully gained enough signatures to qualify for a ballot, and she has been asked to resign before the vote.
Oakland has been facing unprecedented crime and violence in the past few years. Popular outlet In-N-Out and Oakland A’s baseball team have left the city. These factors have also been responsible for the recall campaign, which has gained enough signatures to require a ballot expected to be held in November unless she resigns earlier.
