FBI has opened an investigation into multiple claims of sexual exploitation and abuse by the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch. Mike Jeffries and his British partner allegedly exploited and abused young men at events hosted by him in cities around the world. They allegedly ran a sex trafficking operation and lured men by seemingly offering them modeling contracts but exploiting them instead of giving them contracts.
In October, a BBC documentary and podcast series revealed that Mike Jeffries and partner Matthew Smith had allegedly exploited several men in their residences in New York and in luxury hotels across the world.
Several sources told the BBC that the FBI has begun investigating the allegations against the former CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch, Mike Jeffries. FBI agents are reportedly interviewing and issuing subpoenas to potential witnesses.
Sources have also said FBI agents, who specialize in alleged sexual crimes, are leading the investigation along with federal prosecutors from the Eastern District of New York.
The BBC reported that eight men had told them that they had attended events in cities including London, Paris, and Marrakesh where they were asked to engage in sexual activity with Mike Jeffries and Matthew Smith or with each other.
The outlet also said the operation was highly organized, with many recruiters and a middleman, James Jacobson. The BBC uncovered documents such as flight tickets and event itineraries that indicated a lot of planning.
The BBC tracked down James Jacobson, who said the men went to those events “with their eyes wide open.” He also denied that there was any wrongdoing.
The 70-year-old also wanted to “do a deal,” which was refused by the BBC. He said he would tell them everything if they left his name out.
The BBC also reported that Abercrombie & Fitch told them that they were “appalled and disgusted” by the alleged behavior of their former CEO Mike Jeffries and had suspended part retirement payments after the report.
Mike Jeffries declined to comment through his lawyers despite several attempts by the BBC, while Matthew Smith never responded to the allegations put forth by the BBC.
