Salt and Straw, an iconic ice cream company might move out of the city of Portland due to problems created by increased homelessness as well as drug issues. The CEO of the company said that although she was not packing her bags to leave she said that she was letting the city authorities know that the company could not continue till these issues were resolved as she was responsible for her employees as a business owner.
Kim Malek, the CEO and founder of Salt and Straw told KPTV that she had “moved to Portland specifically” to start Salt and Straw as it was “part of our soul” and that she loved the city. However, increasing crime, especially incidents that occurred last week had affected the functioning of the iconic ice cream shop, which is headquartered in Southeast Portland.
Kim Malek told the outlet that an RV had blown up outside their Southeast Second Avenue office, on Monday. It had also affected power supply to the entire neighborhood. Although none of her team members had been physically injured, the incident had traumatized them.

She mentioned another incident had taken place, last Friday, when one of her employees was walking to work. Malek said, “One of our other team members was held at gunpoint with a gun on their face.”
She blamed drug use for the problems faced by the city but also said that there was a way to address it. She noted that “our city and county and state and federal and police enforcement all have to come together to stop the flow of these drugs.”
She said that this coming together would help the entire city of Portland as well as help those who had been “victimized by these drugs.”

According to KPTV, Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office released a statement that said that the “SE neighborhood” was a “work in progress” and that all of them were working to “remove garbage, unsanctioned campsites and vehicles/RVs.” The statement also noted that the recent incident had further demonstrated “the need for safe, monitored, designated camping sites.”
