Two officers in central Connecticut were killed and one was injured while responding to a domestic dispute involving two siblings, which also resulted in the death of the gunman, police reported. At 10:30 p.m. local time, Bristol police officers went to a cry for help and were met by the suspect outside of a house. During a gunfight, the suspect and one of the officers were both fatally wounded, according to Christine Jeltema, a Connecticut State Police spokesman.
Sgt. Dustin Demonte of the Bristol Police Department, a married father of two and “one on the way,” and Officer Alex Hamzy, were killed and Officer Alec Iurrato was injured in the incident. Iurrato, 26, was rushed to a hospital in Hartford, and reportedly recovering from surgery, Connecticut State Police stated.
According to reports, Nicholas Brutcher, a 35-year-old suspect, was shot and killed there. After being shot, his 32-year-old brother Nathan Brutcher was brought to St. Francis Hospital. His condition is not yet known. The 700,000-person metropolis is roughly 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Hartford, the state capital, and is home to the ESPN sports television network’s corporate offices. The shooting happened there about a half-mile away.
A witness, Danny Rodriguez, saw a man carrying a gun leave the Brutcher residence while wearing camouflage. The camouflaged man was pursued by another man, who made an effort to hold him down before shooting him, according to the New York Times. State troopers and detectives are still gathering evidence, according to Jeltema, and the “extremely complex” inquiry is still open.
According to police sources, one of the suspects allegedly called 911 to report a possible phony domestic dispute before ambushing the policemen with an AR-15-style rifle. At the press conference, officials did not address this, but later that morning, Connecticut State Police issued a statement confirming that the police may have been drawn to the house.
The two deceased cops’ remains were transported from the hospital to the medical examiner’s office in adjacent Farmington on Thursday morning by a parade of police vehicles. In remembrance of the dead officers, Governor Ned Lamont ordered all flags in Connecticut to be flown at half-staff.
This serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the risks that police officers must take on a daily basis in order to defend families and neighbors from a variety of perils, the governor said. He also praised the officers, and called them heroes.
