Meta Platforms is launching an alternative to Twitter, days after Elon Musk announced that there would be a temporary cap on the number of posts a user can read. Users of the photo-sharing app Instagram can retain the same followers as well as the same username, according to a listing on Apple’s App Store, for its new app Threads. This is expected to resound with web fans.
Meta’s new app Threads is expected to post a direct challenge to social media platform Twitter that has faced several challenges after it was acquired by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk for $44 billion, late last year. The blue bird has seen various ups and downs and a recent announcement of restrictions on the number of posts that could be read has not gone down with web fans.
Although Twitter has competition in similar apps including Mastodon and Blue Sky, these apps do not challenge Twitter. However, when a mega tech company like Facebook’s parent Meta launches a rival in Threads, there is bound to be a direct challenge.
Instagram has hundreds of millions of users on its platform. It has benefited from adding new features that are successful when introduced by other apps.
In 2016, Instagram added “stories” a feature that disappears after a pre-fixed time. This is similar to Snapchat. Recently, Meta added Reels, a feature that directly competes with the short video app TikTok. Now, Meta will be launching Threads which is expected to threaten the popularity of Twitter.
