EzriCare eyedrops linked to bacterial infections-
The manufacturer of eyedrops sold under the name EzriCare withdrew them on Thursday due to a potential Pseudomonas aeruginosa contamination, a form of bacteria that is highly resistant to antibiotics.
At least 55 bacterial infections in twelve states have been connected to EzriCare artificial tears. So far, eyesight loss has affected five of those individuals. When the bacterium got into the bloodstream of one person, three passed away.
EzriCare Artificial Tears are not recommended for use, according to the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as they may be contaminated and connected to a Pseudomonas aeruginosa outbreak that resulted in one fatality. It was reported that at least three people have suffered permanent vision loss.
Global Pharma, the product’s manufacturer, announced a recall on Wednesday. Additionally, hospitalization and blindness were related to the substance. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause infections of the lungs, blood, and other regions of the body in people, particularly after surgery, is a type of bacteria that is frequently found in soil or water, according to the CDC.
The CDC reported: Review of common exposures among patients identified that the majority of patients used artificial tears prior to identification of VIMâ€GESâ€CRPA infection or colonization. The most common brand reported was EzriCare Artificial Tears, a preservativeâ€free product dispensed in multidose bottles. Laboratory testing of EzriCare Artificial Tears by CDC identified the presence of VIMâ€CRPA in opened EzriCare bottles; these VIMâ€CRPA are undergoing further characterization, including testing for GES and to determine ST, to assess if they match the outbreak strain. Testing of unopened bottles of EzriCare Artificial Tears is ongoing. CDC recommends that clinicians and patients immediately discontinue the use of EzriCare Artificial Tears until the epidemiological investigation and laboratory analyses are complete.
