The DOJ’s war on the Mexican drug cartel is relentless. On Friday, the Justice Department announced charges against 28 members of Mexico’s infamous Sinaloa cartel for their roles in a widespread fentanyl trafficking operation, including the sons of notorious drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
Former Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaqun Guzmán Loera, aka “El Chapo,” is currently serving life in prison. It is believed that he had many children, but only a select few, known as the Chapitos, are currently engaged in a power struggle with the group’s last remaining “old guard” member, Ismael Zambada Garca, aka “El Mayo.”

Suspect Sinaloa Cartel commander Ovidio Guzmán, who was arrested in January 2023, claimed he was not the son of drug lord Joaqun “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera in March of that year. Suspected “Los Chapitos” sector commander of the cartel made the astonishing claim at a court hearing where he was formally told of the United States request for his extradition. In 2019, Ovidio was arrested in Culiacán but was quickly released due to reprisal from the Sinaloa Cartel and fears of a possible revolt.
Guzmán is accused of eleven separate counts of drug trafficking, gun possession, and money laundering in the United States, all of which carry potential life sentences if proven true.
Guzman testified via video link from Altiplano maximum security prison in the state of México, claiming that his incarceration was the consequence of mistaken identity.
The United States government is presently seeking extradition of Guzmán’s son.
In 2021 and 2022, the Chapitos prospered to the point where they were among the most important suppliers of fentanyl and methamphetamine to the United States. They expanded their hegemony in the states of Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Sonora, and Baja California. To supplement their income, they engaged in a variety of “front” companies, such as fishing, migrant smuggling, mining, and others.

On April 13, 2023, U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco attended a luncheon for government officials from Mexico to discuss ways in which the two countries may work together to combat fentanyl and gun trafficking.
This followed talks between American and Mexican officials at the White House. Mexico’s delegation was led by Rosa Icela Rodriguez, who was recently appointed to head a presidential commission to combat the illegal trafficking of synthetic narcotics, guns, and ammunition. Rodriguez is in charge of protecting citizens and is a cabinet member.
The war on fentanyl trafficking and the prevention of the cartels’ access to illegal firearms were discussed at length by the officials present. They also highlighted the major progress made in both areas as a result of the two countries working together.
The two delegations have decided to form new bilateral working groups to combat the illegal trafficking of guns and precursor chemicals.
