Bryan Christopher Kohberger is waving extradition from Pennsylvania to Idaho on quadruple homicide charges. He will be transported back to Idaho to face charges for one of the most horrific crimes in the U.S.
When law enforcement officers extradite a suspect in a quadruple homicide that has gripped the country, U.S. Marshals will escort the defendant on a smaller aircraft. They would not normally use a commercial airline to transport the defendant.
Jason Allen LaBar, the Chief Public Defender for Monroe County who was appointed to represent Kohberger in Pennsylvania, said in a statement, “Mr. Kohberger intends to waive his extradition hearing to expedite his transport to Idaho.” “Mr. Kohberger has been accused of very serious crimes, but the American justice system cloaks him in a veil of innocence. He should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise – not tried in the court of public opinion. One should not pass judgment about the facts of the case unless and until a fair trial in court at which time all sides may be heard, and inferences challenged.”
According to a source acquainted with Kohberger’s condition at the facility, the warden of the Monroe County Correctional Facility advised officials that he has been a “model prisoner” who has not caused any difficulties throughout his time in incarceration. Kohberger, a maximum-security prisoner, is being detained in a cell that is monitored closely by an officer 24/7. He has been “calm” and “following directions,” according to the source.
Jason LaBar, Kohberger’s current Pennsylvania State attorney, has indicated that his client cannot pay for a private lawyer and will be assigned a public defender when he returns to Idaho.
The parents are in shock. “They don’t believe it to be Bryan. They can’t believe this. They’re obviously shocked,” said Jason LaBar, the chief public defender of Monroe County. LaBar also said, “It is a little out of character,” he said. This is not him. He believes he’s going to be exonerated – that’s what he believes, those were his words, so he’s really been very easy to talk to, actually, and he’s in a calm demeanor, like I stated.”
Around 10:41 a.m., the two passengers in the vehicle were stopped on the highway by a deputy from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department for following too closely, reports the sheriff’s department. The police officers chose to give the two individuals a verbal warning in both encounters.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Robert Evanchick said at a news conference, “My heart goes out to the families of the victims, their friends, the community of Moscow and the University of Idaho.” “No words can heal the pain associated with the loss of a child. Their young lives were ended far too soon.”
Upon Kohberger’s return to Idaho, he will be served with the Idaho arrest warrant for four counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Burglary. Once that arrest warrant is returned to the court, the probable cause affidavit will be unsealed. Anyone in the media or the public who is seeking a copy of the probable cause affidavit will need to do so through the Idaho Judicial Cases of Interest webpage: https://coi.isc.idaho.gov/
