Celebrity Jacob Hoggard, former singer in Canadian pop-rock group Hedley, was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday, after being found guilty earlier this year of sexually abusing an Ottawa woman in what the presiding judge described as a “particularly degrading rape.”
Justice Gillian Roberts of the Ontario Superior Court stated that she accepted the woman’s testimony in its entirety and added that Hoggard’s actions had been actions were “manipulative and particularly degrading.” The Ottawa woman testified during Hoggard’s sentence hearing that the 2016 sexual assault, which occurred in a Toronto hotel room, will haunt her for the rest of her life.
When Hoggard choked the woman, who was in her early 20s, she claimed she believed she was going to pass away. She claimed that the sexual attack went on for several hours. Hoggard had also been accused of sexual assault resulting in physical damage and sexual interference involving the complainant, a teenage fan, but he was cleared of those charges.
She claimed that he later hit her and yanked her off the bed in the hotel room before choking her with both hands. The 38-year-old had entered a not-guilty plea to every accusation.

Hoggard said throughout the trial that he had “passionate” intercourse with both complainants with their consent. He denied choking the Ottawa woman, but admitted that the other incidents–such as spitting and slapping–could have occurred given his sexual inclinations. The Ottawa lady said in court earlier this month during a sentencing hearing that the experience paralyzed her for months with terror and hopelessness.
Due to a usual publishing embargo, the woman, who cannot be identified, said that the sexual assault stole her dreams and self-confidence and changed her life. After that day, the victim claimed she would never be the same again.
Before finding Hoggard guilty of sexual assault inflicting bodily harm in the case of the Ottawa woman in June, a jury deliberated for six days and twice reached a deadlock on certain counts.
For ten years, Hoggard is prohibited from owning any weapons, and for twenty years, he must register as a sex offender. Hoggard was granted bail by an Ontario Court of Appeal judge hours after being sentenced so that he may wait for the outcome of his appeal
