Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was among the Stop Israel march by pro-Palestinian protesters outside Malmö, Sweden, the venue for the Eurovision finals. The climate change advocate was wearing a Keffiyeh scarf and reportedly detained by Swedish police and was removed from a Palestinian protest near the Eurovision stage. She has been pictured with uniformed police moving her away from the venue, where thousands were protesting Israel’s participation in the tournament.
The reason is that its military is committing genocide in Gaza, which the latter vehemently denies. Demonstrators tried to invade the venue but were stopped by the police. Thunberg has charged Israel with “artwashing” its image during the Eurovision Song Contest.
According to reports, despite ongoing calls, the European Broadcasting Union, responsible for Eurovision, has consistently refused to exclude Israel from the contest, even amid the conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in an estimated death toll of up to 35,000. More than 100 demonstrators waved flags and chanted “free Palestine” during the protest, sparking clashes between protesters and police. Reports say that the lawmakers used pepper spray into the crowd, causing conflict and arrests.
Pro-Palestinian protestors want Israel (Eden Golan) removed from the Eurovision competition because it conflicted with Hamas, where 1,200 people were killed and about 250 kidnapped by gunmen and taken back into Gaza.
