ESPN, the sports network of Disney Inc. (DIS) wants to become the hub of all live streaming sports events. The popular network is reportedly talking to major sports leagues to make it a reality, even if it includes networks who compete with it.
CNBC reported that sources familiar with the matter told them that ESPN has begun to have such conversations with major leagues as well as sports media partners. The feature would be reportedly launched on the ESPN website as well as in its app. It will provide users a direct link to the location where streaming of a live event is taking place, in real time.

ESPN could include regional, national and global streaming platforms such as
Sinclair’s
Bally Sports+
Madison Square Garden Entertainment’s MSG+
Apple TV+
Amazon Prime Video and others.
The people, who asked not to be named, told the outlet that the talks were private. They also said that the sports network had not as yet determined who would be its actual media partners. ESPN had not discussed a timeline or a possible launch of the feature.
Two people also told CNBC that the business concept could change but that ESPN had looked for a model where the network would take a small amount of the subscription revenue from the customer who used their website or app to sign up for a streaming service.
If a user already subscribed “to a given service,” then ESPN would not collect money. The sports network would provide the link as a courtesy, according to these two people.
The people also mentioned that the sports network might also alert users about games that air on linear TV. These alerts would strengthen ESPN’s role as a TV guide of live sports.
The outlet also said ESPN self-proclaims itself to be “the worldwide leader in sports” as it links users to roughly one third of all televised or streamed U.S. sports. The parent company Disney network might be looking at increasing revenue rather than uniqueness of content and this strategic shift by ESPN might be a step forward towards achieving this goal.
The outlet also said that an ESPN spokesman declined to comment.
