The crystal ball fell on Times Square on New York City and ushered in not only a new year but also a new mayor. Eric Adams was sworn in as the mayor of New York City in Times Square, minutes after the New Year’s Eve ball drop. Term limited outgoing mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray danced to Frank Sinatra’s super hit track “New York, New York” after the clock ran out on 2021.
Eric Leroy Adams held a picture of his late mother in one hand, who died in 2020. He placed his other hand on a family bible that was held by his son Jordan Coleman. He was sworn in by Hon. Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix, who is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of New York State. The Democratic candidate had defeated his Republican opponent Curtis Silwa by a huge margin. The 61-year old former captain is the second black mayor in the city.
The city’s 110th mayor who is a former Brooklyn borough president said that “New York is back” minutes after his post midnight sweating-in. The ceremony was muted as the pandemic is raging across New York City as well as the rest of the nation.
Eric Adams has a tough task ahead as New York City (NYC) is facing several problems including a surge in crime as well as a surge in omicron cases. Although former mayor de Blasio believed that he left the city in a better state than it was eight year ago, many disagree as murders, crimes, shootings and other anti-social activities are at an all time high.
Eric Adams is a former Police Captain of New York Police Department (NYPD). He and his brother joined the NYPD to change it from the inside as they faced beatings and arrests as teenagers. During his campaign, he vowed to be tough on crime. He also spoke of encouraging businesses as the pandemic shut down a huge amount of business activity in the Big Apple.
Eric Adams said that he planned to get right back to work. He is expected to take the subway from Brooklyn to City Hall and arrive by 8.30 a.m. His schedule also indicates that he will hold a cabinet meeting at 9 a.m.
