The 57-page indictment against the New York mayor was unsealed on Thursday. It accuses Adams of five criminal counts, including bribery, fraud, and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. The indictment also accuses him of accepting “improper value benefits” at least since 2014 and more.
Damian Williams, the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, said that Adams was aware that he was accepting illegal gifts and that there were clumsy attempts to cover up such gifts. Many of these gifts were related to the Turkish government and Turkish Airlines. According to prosecutors, the value of these gifts was more than $100,000.
Many elected officials, including members of the Democratic Party, have asked Eric Adams to resign. Some of his inner circle team resigned days after federal authorities seized their phones.
City Schools Chancellor David Banks told Eric Adams on Tuesday that he would retire at the end of 2024. Weeks ago, federal authorities seized his electronic devices and those of his family members, including his brother, Deputy Mayor Phil Banks, and his fiancée, Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright.
On September 12, Edward Caban resigned as police commissioner. A week earlier, his phone had been seized. Authorities are investigating whether his twin brother James Caban used his connection with his brother Edward and the New York Police Department to benefit his business.
Eric Adam’s mayoral counsel and chief legal advisor, Lisa Zornberg, resigned three days after the police commissioner.
Last Friday, federal investigators used search warrants on the homes of acting New York Police Department Commissioner Thomas Donlon. The former FBI counter-terrorism official said the materials taken were “…unrelated to my work with the New York Police Department.”
It remains to be seen whether 64-year-old Eric Adams will resign or be removed. He has had a long career in New York, including that of police captain. He has had many web fans over the years, and some of them have expressed their disappointment after he was indicted.
