Late Friday, General Motors Co. said that it had halted paid advertising on Twitter. The automaker said that the decision was temporary as it had been engaging with the social media platform to understand the direction under the new ownership. Elon Musk officially bought Twitter for $44 billion, late Thursday. He is also the CEO of GM’s biggest rival–Tesla Motors.
The Detroit automobile giant called it a “normal course of business” as the media platform had undergone a change and mentioned it as the reason that they had “temporarily paused” their “paid advertising.” The company added that it would continue to interact with its customers on Twitter.
On Friday, Musk had tweeted that Twitter would form a content moderation council that contained “widely diverse viewpoints.” The post also said that no major content decisions or account reinstatements would happen before the convening of the council. However several outlets reported that celebrity rapper Kanye West’s page was back on Twitter, on Friday. He had earlier been suspended for his anti-semitic rhetoric.
GM CEO Mary Barra had recently announced that billions of dollars would be spent on their battery electric division in direct competition with Tesla.
CNBC also reported that Ford Motor was not advertising on Twitter but had not done so, even prior to the offer by Elon Musk. The outlet showed a screenshot of Ford CEO Jim Farley’s promoted tweet. The spokesperson could not confirm the last time Ford or its collaborators might have used paid promotion on the platform. However, it was confirmed that Ford is engaging with its customers on Twitter.
Auto companies such as Stellantis and Waymo (owned by Alphabet) did not respond to request for comments by the outlet. While Rivian declined to comment, Nikola said that their plans regarding the social media platform remained unchanged.
When Twitter’s board had accepted Musk’s bid for the companies CEO Henry Fisker deleted his Twitter account. However the EV startup Fisker Inc. continues to use Twitter for customer engagement. Tesla Inc. has been using Twitter to promote its company’s products and gives some of those who promote them on the platform early access to its products.
As of now, almost all major automakers or startups have used and are using Twitter for customer engagement. After Tesla CEO Elon Musk has become a self described “Chief Twit” of the social media, it remains to be seen if any automaker will continue with paid promotions on Twitter.
