Billionaire Elon Musk is preparing to build a rival artificial intelligence startup to ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, according to persons familiar with his plans. Musk is also in talks with a number of SpaceX and Tesla investors about investing in his new company.
On Friday, the Financial Times, citing sources familiar with Elon Musk’s plans, reported that the billionaire was building an artificial intelligence start-up to allegedly compete with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. Twitter’s owner is putting together a team of AI academics and engineers and is in talks with several SpaceX and Tesla Inc investors about raising capital for his new business.
Musk has reportedly established a business called X.AI Corporation in the American state of Nevada. According to media sources, the paperwork, found on Friday, lists Musk’s name as the director of the firm, which was established on March 9th, in accordance with the state’s corporate registration. The company’s secretary is described as Jared Birchall, the former Morgan Stanley banker who oversees Musk’s riches.

In recent corporate papers, Musk renamed Twitter to X Corp as part of his intentions to develop an “everything app” under the “X” moniker. Musk recently combined Twitter with a brand-new shell corporation named “X,” keeping the brand name but doing rid of the core operation. Despite Musk’s prior demand for a halt in AI development, this move is considered a potential rival to OpenAI, the company that developed ChatGPT.
Musk has reportedly taken several cost-cutting measures, such as layoffs, while also investing in computing chips and onboarding engineering talent for an alleged Twitter AI project. It is unclear whether this business is associated with Musk’s rumored AI start-up endeavors. Musk left the company’s board in 2018, however, he was one of the co-founders of OpenAI, which had been founded in 2015 as a non-profit.
