Late Monday, Elon Musk posted on his social media platform that a human patient had received a brain implant developed by his company Neuralink. He also mentioned that the initial results had been promising and that the patient was recovering from the surgery.
Neuralink has developed a wireless system. It records neural activity using over 1000 electrodes distributed across 64 threads. Each thread is thinner than a human hair. This implant is a milestone for the company, but how well it functions in an actual human subject remains to be seen.
Neuralink was in the news for all the wrong reasons earlier, as a September investigation by Wired reported that monkeys had died during the implant trials, and the company has not adequately reported this.

In January, Reuters reported that Neuralink violated rules the U.S. Department of Transportation set while moving hazardous materials.
Neuralink has now successfully implanted a device in a human patient, and the results are hoped to be favorable.

Initial results show promising neuron spike detection.
Not many details have been provided in the post on X by Musk.
The company had received approval from the FDA in May for human trials and began recruiting patients who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or cervical spinal cord injury.

Neuralink is not the first company to outfit humans with similar devices as part of research studies. The first patient to receive a brain implant was Matt Nagle in 2004. Many such systems allow paralyzed people to play video games, move robotic arms, and write emails using the thinking process.

Competitor Synchron has already shown that its brain-computer interface (BCI) implanted in humans is safe. The implant by the New York-based company lets patients browse on the web. They can also shop online and undertake banking operations for the safety and security of their homes.
Neither Musk nor Neuralink have responded when asked for further details.
