Elon Musk appeared on Saturday Night Live on Saturday of course! And the ratings hit the roof while cryptocurrency plunged to the depths. Seriously speaking Elon Musk does have a rather – – – – – effect on people and things. His appearance on SNL was controversial as businessmen rarely appear on the show. He was criticized by some of the regular cast even before his appearance and the musical guest in his show, the immensely popular Miley Cyrus faced flak from fans as she promoted their joint appearance. His girlfriend and mother of his child Grimes faced backlash from her fans for just being his partner. The Tesla CEO’s favorite cryptocurrency tanked but the network NBC was the only one laughing all the way to the bank as the show got its third highest rating in this season.
So, what were the stats of the Good, the Bad and the Average (not the Ugly) after Elon Musk’s Saturday Night Live appearance
The Good
NBC’s SNL saw its third highest ratings as the May 8, episode was the third most watched episode of the season. An average of 7.3 viewers watched the show. Nielsen figures show that two episodes which got better ratings were hosted by Dave Chapelle and Chris Rock.
Viewers might have tuned in for various reasons. Some of these reasons could be his millions of followers who wait for every word and pronouncement of his on cryptocurrencies and other matters. There must have also been a curiosity factor. SNL is a popular show and most of the regulars would have anyway watched the show. The show was live streamed which got it additional viewership. Last but not the least, Miley Cyrus was on the show!
The Bad
Dogecoin, the fun cryptocurrency that has been promoted several times by the SpaceX CEO almost literally fell from the moon to the earth. It lost 22 percent of its value during the show. The high trades especially on the Robinhood app cause the app to shut down, literally, reminding one of the GameStop frenzy.
However, the Dogecoin has recently recovered especially since it is going back to the moon and the Robinhood app was also restored online for trading.
On Sunday, Elon Musk tweeted that he would be sending DOGE-1 to the moon, partnering with Geometric Electric Corporation, a technology company based in Canada. The Dogecoin will be the unit of account for the mission to the moon. So, the bad is now not so bad.
Unfortunately, his partner Grimes, who played Nintendo’s Princess Peach, in one of the SNL sketches said that she suffered from a panic attack, two days after her appearance on the show. However, she is also feeling better.
The Average
Although he got a huge viewership, reviews were not kind to him. He was labeled as “awkward.” But worse still was the label of “unfunny” in a comedy show. This is something that perhaps may never change for the better.
