On Sunday, Musk asked Twitter users and his 122 million followers whether he should step down as the head of the company, promising to abide by the results of his poll. Twitter users voted in a poll for Elon Musk to resign as CEO of the social media platform, in a backlash against the billionaire who took over less than two months ago.
When the poll closed on Monday, 57.5% of respondents said he should resign. More than 17.5 million users voted in his poll, with 42.5% voting against Musk stepping down. Musk said on Sunday that he would follow the poll results, but he did not specify when he would step down if the results indicated that he should. No one can force Musk out as the majority owner of the privately held company, but a series of perplexing decisions over the last few days has caused even some of his closest supporters to cut ties with him.
Last week, he banned an account that tracked the location of his private jet, which was followed by the suspension of all critical journalists who reported on the ban. That led in turn to an exodus of certain engaged users to other social networks, chiefly its competitor Mastodon, whose own account was discontinued for posting a link to the jet tracker’s account on the rival platform.
Musk reacted on Sunday by prohibiting all links to other social networks, including Mastodon, Instagram, and Facebook, as well as minor platforms such as Nostr, used by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, and Linktree, a homepage creation tool popular among influencers.
The sudden banning of accounts that promoted competing social media platforms like Facebook sparked retaliation even from long-time supporters. That ban was rescinded by the end of the day, after a Twitter poll from the Twitter Safety account, with Musk saying: “Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. Please accept my apologies. It will not happen again.”
Musk has previously followed Twitter polls. He’s fond of quoting the phrase “vox populi, vox dei”, a Latin phrase that roughly means “the voice of the people is the voice of God”.
The billionaire’s poll is the latest twist in his chaotic reign as Twitter CEO since October, which has included rapid firings of top management and thousands of employees, back-and-forth over how much to charge for the social media firm’s subscription service Twitter Blue, and the reinstatement of banned accounts, including former US President Donald Trump’s.
Meanwhile, investors in Tesla Inc. are concerned that Musk, a self-described “nanomanager” who has been personally involved in working-level decisions ranging from car styling to supply chain issues, is distracted at a critical juncture for the world’s largest electric-vehicle maker.
