Elena Delle Donne powers Mystics to blowout of Dream

Elena Delle Donne finished with 25 points as the Washington Mystics cruised to a 109-86 victory over the visiting Atlanta Dream on Wednesday.

Delle Donne shot 10 of 17 from the field, to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Ariel Atkins finished with 19 points, which included going 3-for-4 from 3-point range, in addition to collecting five rebounds and three assists.

Tianna Hawkins finished with a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Brittney Sykes chipped in 12 points and 10 assists for Washington (9-5), which has won four of its past five games.

The Mystics, who led by as many as 32 points in the third quarter, shot 53.4 percent from the field, including a red-hot 11 of 22 from 3-point range.

Cheyenne Parker had 23 points and eight rebounds for the Dream (5-8), who have dropped three straight games.

Allisha Gray chipped in 17 points, while Nia Coffey added 14 points and four rebounds. However, Rhyne Howard, who averages 17.3 points per game, was held to eight points on 3-for-9 shooting from the field.

The Dream shot 37.8 percent from the field, including 5 of 15 from beyond the arc.

After the Mystics pushed their advantage to 81-55 on Myisha Hines Allen’s free throw with 1:34 left in the third quarter, the Dream closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to pull to within 81-63.

Delle Donne’s three-point play extended the Mystics’ lead to 95-74 with six minutes left.

Leading 26-20 after the first quarter, the Mystics put the game away by outscoring the Dream 35-13 in the second quarter to take a 61-33 halftime advantage.

Delle Donne scored 12 points and Sykes had 10 in the first half for the Mystics, who shot 20 of 37 (54.1 percent) from the field, including an impressive 5 of 10 (50 percent) from beyond the arc.

The teams meet again on Friday in College Park, Ga.
