On Saturday, eight gunmen, who were masked, attacked a security guard and robbed a truck that was filled with cigarettes in Oakland, California. Cigarettes are worth tens of thousands of dollars. No one has been arrested, though many people shot live videos and took photos as the robbery took place in the evening in a crowded location.
Video footage shows that a large number of gunmen surround a security guard with drawn guns at a parking lot. They take away his gun and taser and knock him down. They then proceed towards a truck, go inside, and start carrying large crates that contain cigarettes.
The robbery took place at a parking area outside a 7-Eleven in the Grand Lake neighborhood of Oakland at about 5 p.m. on Saturday evening. Many people were in the neighborhood and filmed the incident. They also called 911. The entire incident occurred in about 90 seconds.
CBS reported that the 7-Eleven owner said that cigarettes have often been targeted by robbers as they can be sold easily on the streets. Convenience stores in Oakland are reportedly often targeted, and cigarettes are stolen as they are easy-to-move items and a carton can sell for more than $100.
Some small businesses and a few popular restaurants have shuttered because of crime including robbery and carjacking. Popular restaurants Le Cheval and Galeto Brazilian Steakhouse recently closed down in the area due to car thefts and crime.
Oakland has seen 3.279 robberies as of November 19, 2023. This is approximately a 35 percent increase from 2022. There is a recall effort for District Attorney Pamela Price due to the chaos in Alameda County.
There has also been an increase in home invasion robberies in the county, according to the police. Robbers are kicking down doors, threatening inmates, and robbing them.
