An alternate league called the “Super Golf League” has faced another rejection by a top golfer as Dustin Johnson, who is ranked No. 6 in the world, officially announced that he was fully committed to the PGA. This is the last stroke from the top golf players as there was speculation that he might join as he had remained silent on the issue, so far.
Earlier, top golfers around the world including players such as John Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka had also said that they had rejected the league. In a statement on Sunday, Johnson said, “I am fully committed to the PGA Tour.” This put aside earlier speculation and added one more blow to the not as yet formed so called super league.
The Super Golf League is funded by former No. 1 British golfer Greg Norman along with LIV Investments, a Saudi government backed company. It has been trying to lure away top golfers from the PGA Tour with huge cash incentives but has been unsuccessful. After Johnson’s statement, it is confirmed that all the top eight players in the world have officially committed to the PGA.
On Saturday, The Washington Post released a story that said that LIV Investments was in talks with Donald Trump, to use his golf courses for the newly formed league, including its New Jersey and Florida golf courses. They said that they had received the information from multiple sources who wished to remain anonymous.
It might be recalled that The WaPo journalist Adnan Kashoggi was brutally murdered reportedly by the Saudi regime who denied it and so did the former president Trump. Amnesty called the investment of the Middle Eastern regime in sports a type of “whitewashing.”
When asked for comment by multiple outlets neither LIV, nor Norman nor Trump representatives have responded.
After the January 6 riot in the Capitol in 2021, the PGA canceled its agreement of holding the 2022 PGA Championships at the Bedminister golf course in New Jersey, which is owned by Donald Trump. The Royal & Ancient also said that they would not consider any Trump golf course for future British Opens.
