On Wednesday afternoon, reports say that Meta platforms reinstated former President Donald Trump‘s social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. Trump had been indefinitely suspended from several social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram of parent company Meta as he had incited his followers using these platforms before and on the January 6 insurrection. Last week, his presidential campaign had written to Meta asking them to restore his accounts. Meta has done so, with certain rioters.
On January 7, 2021, the former president’s Facebook account was indefinitely suspended, by Meta. Later the company said that the ban would last for at least two years. After Trump’s presidential campaign formally asked the company to reinstate his account, on Wednesday the company announced that the account was reinstated but would face “guardrails.”
Meta spokesman Nick Clegg wrote, “We believe it is both necessary and possible to draw a line between content that is harmful and should be removed, and content that, however distasteful or inaccurate, is part of the rough and tumble of life in a free society.”
After being banned from most major social media platforms after January 6, Trump launched his own social media company called Truth Social, in 2022. It is his primary platform, and he posts his comments on this social media platform.
In November 2022, Trump’s account on Twitter was restored, weeks after Elon Musk bought the microblogging platform. He had named himself its CEO, after dismissing the board of directors. Trump has remained silent on the social media platform but a recent report by NBC News said that he was seriously considering a return to the platform.
Trump has an exclusive deal to post first on Truth Social. He has a much larger fan base on Facebook. He used a Facebook book page for fundraising. His 2020 reelection campaign had spent millions and millions of dollars on advertising Facebook.
Meta has said that another suspension on its platforms could be possible if Trump flouts rules. It remains to be seen when Trump posts on Facebook and Instagram and whether he follows the “guardrails” set by Meta.
