On Sunday night, former US President Donald Trump referred to Florida’s governor as “Ron DeSanctimonious”, capping off a weekend that saw him campaign vehemently against a potential 2024 Republican opponent. Trump used the nickname twice in two posts on his Truth Social app, accusing DeSantis of being a “globalist” and shutting down “Florida and its beaches” during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The fact that he is once again going by that name indicates that the former president is prepared to engage in full-scale political conflict with his rising rival. DeSantis has not formally announced a run for president, but Trump seems to be enraged by his refusal to rule one out in the upcoming election cycle.
The 2024 presidential election is beginning to heat up, according to reports that Florida’s right-wing Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, is preparing to run for president as Donald Trump begins to officially campaign.
DeSantis’ actions even prompted Trump to directly criticize him as the former US president held relatively low-key events over the weekend in South Carolina and New Hampshire, two crucial states with early voting. “Ron would have not been governor if it wasn’t for me… when I hear he might run, I consider that very disloyal,” before the attack on DeSantis’s actions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
DeSantis took office as governor of Florida in the shadow of Trump, whose political rhetoric he closely resembled. His popularity among many party officials who are wary of the scandals and chaos that surrounded Trump’s time in office has grown. He has since emerged as Trump’s most potent political rival within the Republican party.
In the Republican party, DeSantis has established a position that invites conflict with Trump. On the extreme right, especially in regards to social issues, he has stated. His state has restricted abortion and LGBTQ+ rights, tried to portray higher education as a stronghold of liberal influence and used a number of political gimmicks to inflame tensions over immigration.
Trump has threatened the governor in response to his potential run for president. Trump seemed to be warning DeSantis when he alluded to reportedly political blackmail against DeSantis’ potential 2024 campaign in November last year.
According to the Times, Trump decided on the nickname after DeSantis’s wife tweeted an exaggerated video suggesting the governor was literally sent by God to bully teenagers, harass migrants, and prevent children from receiving life-saving vaccines.
