Dharmesh Arvind Patel, radiologist in Mission Hills, California, 40 years of age, was charged with three counts of attempted murder in connection with the crash that injured his wife and two children, a 7-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy.
Patel drove his Tesla off a Northern California cliff 250 feet with his family inside on January 2, 2023. He was charged with attempted murder and child abuse after all four survived the crash.
According to the California Highway Patrol, “investigators found probable cause to think this incident was a deliberate act” after speaking with witnesses and gathering evidence at the scene of the disaster.” Officials say they were unable to determine the Tesla’s driving mode during the crash, although it does not appear to have played a role in this occurrence.
Patel was released from the hospital and will be booked into San Mateo County Jail where he will await trial.
The family lives on Lomay Place in Pasadena, California, an upscale area of Los Angeles.
The crash took place on the coastal area of Northern California known as Devil’s Slide. It is located between Pacifica and Montara on the San Mateo County coast. It gets its name from the rocky margins that are prone to accidents. Following the death of a Montara man Ryan Moss in 2017, Caltrans constructed 36-inch-high temporary concrete barriers near Gray Whale Cove. After two drivers were died when driving over the cliff in 2020, Caltrans constructed 140 feet of temporary barriers above the cove. Patel and his family went across to the north of Gray Whale Cove, just below the old WWII bunker.
