A case of cold rape that dates back more than two decades may have been solved thanks to DNA evidence found in a coffee cup. In the US, a man has been detained in relation to two rapes that took place, on golf courses over two decades ago. 51-year-old Kurt Rillema was charged on April 18 in relation to two rapes, one at the Twin Lakes Golf Club in Michigan in 1999 and one at a Penn State University golf course in 2000.
Following the discovery of the same DNA at both places in 2004, police were able to confirm that the two incidents were related. Police attempted to identify the suspect, but were unsuccessful, and the matter was closed. However, in 2021, investigators developed a new technique to locate and identify the suspect: genetic genealogy. This procedure searches public databases for relatives’ DNA, aiding in the identification of the culprit. Rillema and his two brothers were eventually identified as the suspects by investigators.

Last Monday, police revealed that they had been able to find a Styrofoam cup Rillema used and that his DNA had matched that of the DNA discovered at the crime scenes. In 1999, Rillema is said to have entered an area reserved for staff only at the Twin Lakes Golf Club in Oakland Township, Michigan, and attacked a 22-year-old lady. He swiftly departed the scene, but his DNA was found there, according to a Law and Crime report. Less than a year later, on July 27, 2000, Rillema is accused of attacking a 19-year-old woman who was jogging on the Penn State University’s Blur Course.
Rillema allegedly stopped the victim at the 18th hole and asked her for a bandage. The victim informed police that Rillema then took a knife from her pocket, put it to her throat, hit her in the stomach, and began raping her. He was detained at his residence and accused of first- and second-degree sexual activity. In Pennsylvania, Rillema will face felony charges of rape, sexual assault, and aggravated indecent assault. According to Centre Daily Times, there were no cameras or witnesses present when he attacked his victims.

Police believe that there could be other victims as well. This is the most recent case solved by new DNA techniques, and the number is growing. Last month an Indiana man was detained in connection with the murder of Mary Luicile Willfong that took place in 1989.
