A father who was picking up snacks for his daughter from his neighborhood bodega in Manhattan was shot to death during a dispute with a gunman. Workers scrambled to safeguard the man’s young daughter who was just feet away from the tragic scene.
Police are reviewing new surveillance video from the moments before a man was fatally shot in a Manhattan deli while holding his young daughter. Officials say an argument broke out between two men shortly after 4 p.m. inside 144 Nagel Avenue.
Tykeem Berry, 30 years old, was shot in the chest. His 10-year-old daughter witnessed the incident. She was unharmed. As a witness stated, Berry slipped in and out of consciousness, so someone administered aid before the police arrived. Berry passed away at Harlem Hospital.
During the argument, surveillance video shows the suspect leaving the bodega with his hand in his green coat. According to police, the suspect later returned to the store and fired a single shot into Berry’s chest. It was unclear what actually sparked the argument.
The shooter is still being sought by police. He appeared to be in his twenties and fled north on Nagle Avenue toward Dyckman Street immediately after the incident.
Surveillance video showed a man in a green North Face jacket yelling and reaching for something with his right hand near the shop’s front door. Moments later, the video shows he was yelling at 30-year-old Tykeem Berry, who was wearing a red puffy jacket and putting his headphones on the counter.
Berry appeared to be told to stay inside the store by the employees behind the cash register when the other man burst back in and pulled out a gun. Berry wrestled with him, according to video, before being shot in the chest at point-blank range by police.
Another surveillance camera captured the shooter sprinting away from the scene, crossing the street. According to the bodega owner, people crowded around the victim during his final mother ents. What the cameras didn’t show were bodega employees and customers protecting the victim’s daughter, who was inside the shop at the time of the shooting.
The victim had been a loyal customer for 15 years, according to the owner of the bodega. He would visit the store every morning before dropping his daughter off at school to get a sandwich. There have been no arrests, and the investigation is still ongoing.
