Walt Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Fox Corp. announced the launch of a new sports streaming platform that will include services from their broad portfolios. The Tuesday announcement mentioned an autumn launch of a joint venture that would interest younger viewers who do not watch television but are interested in both professional and college sports through streaming services.
The new service, which has not yet been named, will offer streaming content and programming from TV channels, including ESPN, TNT, and FS1. The service will also be available as part of streaming bundles offered by Disney Plus, Hulu, or Max.
Sports and games of the National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball Association (NBA), and Major League Baseball (MLB), as well as FIFA World Cup and college competitions, will be streamed on this new service.
Millions of households in the US pay for high-speed internet access. However, many of them do not subscribe to paid TV channels. A new sports streaming channel will open a broad market for giant media corporations who pay high fees for rights to NBA, NFL, and MLB games and global sports competitions and events. A joint streaming service will offset some of these costs, and all three media companies will own the service.
Other major corporations, such as Apple, Amazon, and Roku, who aggregate streaming videos for their customers, will also welcome an all-in-one sports streaming platform.
People who know the matter have said that CEOs from these media and entertainment giants have been in discussions for a collaboration for some time. They also noted that the new venture will increase choices for customers without replacing the flagship television networks owned by them.
Both Disney’s ESPN television network and Fox Corp’s FS1 have huge groups of fans. The companies are not looking to replace this diehard fan base but want to increase their reach to new web fans through an all-in-one sports streaming service.
