Walt Disney Co. (DIS) sued Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and his board for waging a “relentless campaign to weaponize government power.” The suit was filed on Wednesday hours after a board backed by DeSantis moved to thwart Disney’s earlier move by its outgoing board by declaring it void. There has been a constant back and forth between Disney and DeSantis and his team ever since the entertainment giant spoke up against a bill that is commonly called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

The federal lawsuit that was filed by Disney alleged that DeSantis “orchestrated at every step” a campaign that was designed to punish the giant entertainment company. It also mentioned that the campaign was meant to threaten its business in the state. Disney is the largest employer in the Sunshine State.

Earlier on Wednesday, the district’s board of supervisors moved to undo an earlier deal that was struck by the outgoing board members of Disney. The new board consists of members chosen by governor DeSantis. Its members called the earlier development deal struck by the former board members “void and unenforceable.”

DIS Disney

Disney’s lawsuit said that this action by the new board was the “latest strike” against the company. It also noted that the development contracts had “laid the foundations for billions of Disney’s investment dollars and thousands of jobs.”

The civil complaint that was filed in U.S. District Court in northern Florida also declared that the action taken by the government was “patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional.”

Disney is requesting the court to rule that the legislative step taken by the board was “unlawful and unenforceable.”

On Wednesday, board chair Martin Gracia said that they had tried to work with Disney but the company was responsible for creating a legal mess and that taxes would have to be raised to hire lawyers.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is currently on an overseas trip. His handling of the battle between man and mouse has been criticized by GOP members including Donald Trump. Reports say that DeSantis might announce a presidential run after May 5, when the current legislative session in the Sunshine State is expected to end.
