Former police officer Derek Chauvin, who is in federal prison, was stabbed on Friday, according to a report from a popular outlet who quoted sources familiar with the matter. Derek Chauvin had been convicted of killing George Floyd. The outlet also said that Chauvin was stable and that he is expected to survive.
The Bureau of Prisons released a statement saying that an inmate had been assaulted at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tuscon, Arizona. It also mentioned the time of the assault as approximately 12.30 p.m. local time and said that the situation was contained by prison employees who had responded to the incident.
The statement also said “life-saving measures” had been taken by prison employees as well as Emergency Medical Services (EMS). It also noted that no employees had been injured and that the FBI had been informed about the incident. It did not name the inmate but said that the inmate had been taken to a hospital where the inmate was treated and evaluated.
Associated Press, who was the first to report the incident, said that sources had identified the inmate as Derek Chauvin, on the condition of anonymity. The outlet left messages for comment to Chauvin’s lawyer and the FBI but had not received a response.
Later on Saturday, the office of Keith Ellison, the Attorney General of Minnesota released a statement to CNN saying that he was “sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence” and more. It also said Chauvin “should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence.”
Former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court, arguing that he had not received a fair trial. The Supreme Court rejected his appeal earlier this week.
The incident at the Tuscon federal prison is the second major one in recent times in a federal prison, as there was a stabbing at a federal penitentiary in Florida in July. Former high-profile sports doctor Larry Nassar, who fell from grace, after he was found guilty of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was stabbed by an inmate.
