Owner of Rejuvenation Dentistry in Manhattan, Dr. Gerry Curatola takes pleasure in being the ‘one out of five’ dentist who does not suggest well-liked goods and services. According to him, there are four processes that should be avoided.
The first process is root canals which are now performed every day, according to the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. Curatola says that it’s a procedure to get rid of the germs in the infected root canal, which stops the infection from spreading. Instead, Dr. Curatola advises using zirconia-based ceramic dental implants. During these procedures, a patient will have a false tooth attached to a metal post that is placed in their mouth. However, the procedure costs five times more than a root canal.

The second procedure to refrain from is using toothpaste made from activated charcoal. Its supporters assert that it can whiten teeth, get rid of plaque, get rid of surface stains, and refresh breath. Dr. Curatola, however, advises avoiding it because of how abrasive it is. According to a 2017 study, whether used excessively or for an extended period of time, activated charcoal might damage tooth enamel due to its abrasive nature. And it does not protect against tooth decay. A 2021 study says that the whitening effects of charcoal toothpaste are the same as fluoride.
According to Dr. Curatola, the third procedure is metal fillings, which are also known as dental amalgam. He asserted that there aren’t enough safety and effectiveness studies to back up these fillings. His primary complaint with this therapy is that the metal isn’t stable, causing mercury vapor to escape into his mouth.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), mercury makes up around half of a dental amalgam’s composition. In 2020, the FDA issued a warning against the use of metal fillings in a number of high-risk populations, including those who are pregnant, nursing, young, have neurological disorders including Parkinson’s disease, and have compromised renal function. Instead, Dr. Curatola advises using fillings made of ceramic, porcelain, BPA composite, or resin.
The final procedure recommended to be avoided is using mouthwash, which Dr. Curatola says “has no value in oral care. While parabens, found in most kinds of toothpaste and mouthcare products, eliminate dangerous bacteria and other microscopic organisms, they also wear down the healthy cells in the mouth. Instead, Dr. Curatola advises using a DIY mouthwash made with Himalayan Salt, spring water, and aromatic oils like spearmint.
