Denny’s Corporation closed its last diner in Langhorne, Bucks County, Philadelphia. Many web fans who wish to get Moons Over My Hammy and Grand Slams now have to travel to Lehigh Valley, Delaware County, or New Jersey. The diner chain quietly shuttered the doors of its Langhorne location by posting a sign on its front door. Many web fans were disappointed with the closure.
Denny said, “Deciding to close a restaurant is never easy, but it is a normal business practice.”
The company added, “Denny’s has 34 other locations in Pennsylvania. We want to thank our team members and local community for their love of the Denny’s brand.”
The closure of the Denny’s on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown, Langhorne is one among dozens restaurants that closed these past six months. In 2023, Denny’s reported that it closed 57 locations while 60 casual diners were closed in 2022.
According to Denny’s latest earnings report in 2024, 25 locations were closed in the first quarter, while five new locations were opened in the same quarter. One of the recent closures was a 54-year-old branch in Oakland. Many successful restaurant brands closed in Oakland due to soaring crime as well as inflation.
Robert Verostek, Denny’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, mentioned the closure of several outlets in the casual dining chain during a fourth-quarter earnings conference call. He mentioned “inflationary pressures” as the reason for the closures of Denny’s in many locations.
The restaurant industry has been facing supply chain issues and high labor and material costs. Many restaurant chains increased prices to stay afloat, leading to decreased footfall. California has seen a large number of restaurants from many brands close, and one of the reasons mentioned has been the $20 per hour wage.
Companies are shuttering restaurants that perform below the restaurant chain’s benchmark or operate in crime-prone areas. The following chains have closed restaurants recently.
