On Thursday, members of the House of Representatives voted to censure Democratic representative Jamaal Bowman. The representative of New York had pulled a fire alarm in a Capitol office building, when the chamber had been in session. The chamber has recent seen routine censures after the GOP gained majority in the House and three Democrats have been censured, since.

The House voted 214-191 to censure Bowman, mainly along party lines, including present votes and some members did not vote. Representative Lisa McClain, a Republican from Michigan reportedly introduced the censure resolution, defended it and said that the September incident had caused “chaos” and more.

On Wednesday, Representative Jamaal Bowman defended himself during the debate on the floor of the House. Bowman said that he had accidentally set off the alarm and more.

Thursday afternoon Rep. Bowman released a statement expressing “deep regret” and also “apologized” for his mistake and said that he had “taken accountability” for his actions.

In October Representative Jamaal Bowman pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count after the incident took place in September in the Cannon House Office Building. He was fined $1,000 for triggering a fire alarm on September 30 when lawmakers were working to pass a funding bill that would avert government shutdown.

Representative Jamaal Bowman is the third representative to be censured these past few months. In November Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan was censured after her comment that was considered to be asking for an elimination of Israel.

Earlier in June, Republicans voted to censure Rep. Adam Schiff of California. He was censured for his role in investigations against former President Donald Trump by Congress.

On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said that Republicans had been “Going after Democrats repeatedly, week after week after week, because you have nothing better to do. Then I volunteer, censure me next” and more and also said that he would wear a future censure as “a badge of honor.”
