Rep. Dean Phillips is a candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for president. In 2024, the three-term congressman from Minnesota will run against President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination, pushing the moderate candidate to the outside of the party in his struggle against the heavily financed and establishment-backed incumbent.
Phillips said as he announced his run, “I think President Biden has done a spectacular job for our country. But it’s not about the past. This is an election about the future. I will not sit still I will not be quiet in the face of numbers that are so clearly saying that we’re going to be facing an emergency next November.”
Later on, Friday, Phillips is scheduled to have a campaign event outside the Statehouse in Concord, New Hampshire. Following that, the candidate is expected to file for the primary at the secretary of state’s office and start a bus tour.
After missing the Nevada filing deadline, Phillips will have to challenge Biden in South Carolina, a state where a sizable black voting base helped put Biden on the path to success in 2020. This will come after his performance in New Hampshire.
A year and a half ago, in the wake of numerous fresh polls indicating Democrats’ preference for a different candidate, Phillips made headlines by openly declaring he would not back Biden in 2024.
Phillips has very little, if any, chance of winning the Democratic nomination race since Biden is the clear favorite. Recent polling indicates that over 70% of Democratic voters think Biden is too old to properly lead the party in another term, and 67% would rather see a different candidate selected as the nominee.
During a business trip to Poland in 1993, he played a key role in securing the rights to two Polish vodkas while accompanied by his father. Subsequently, Phillips Beverage Company initiated the importation of these vodkas to the United States in 1996 under the names Belvedere and Chopin. This strategic move is widely recognized for pioneering the introduction of ‘super premium’ vodka to the American spirit’s market.
In the year 2000, following the completion of his MBA at the University of Minnesota, he assumed the role of CEO at Phillips Distilling Company.
By 2012, the company had seen substantial growth, with an estimated value exceeding $175 million.
In June of 2019, he cast his vote in favor of a substantial $4.6 billion emergency aid package designed to tackle the pressing issues at the Southern border. Notably, ninety-five Democrats opposed the bill, contending that it fell short in effectively addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis while potentially perpetuating the punitive border policies of the previous Trump administration.
Phillips made a significant career transition when, in 2012, he relinquished his role as CEO of Phillips Distilling to take charge of a small gelato company based in Texas known as Talenti. This company had previously received investments from his father. What followed was a remarkable success story as Talenti swiftly rose to become one of the top-selling ice cream brands in the United States. In a significant business move, the brand was eventually acquired by the multinational consumer goods giant Unilever in 2014, though the financial details of this transaction remain undisclosed.
