Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) canceled more than 700 flights on Monday as it continues to deal with the impact of the shutdown of systems due to the malfunctioning of Crowdstrike software. Many of its competitors have recovered faster and are returning to normal operations. Delta Air Lines shares fell by nearly 4 percent on Monday.

The Atlanta-based airlines canceled 1,500 flights on Friday. Delta canceled close to 3,000 flights over the weekend and more than 700 flights on Monday. FlightAware reported that this is the highest number of cancellations among all global airlines. Other airlines have canceled about 1 percent of their flights.

On Sunday, Delta CEO Ed Bastion wrote a note to its customers and apologized for the airline’s disruption of flights.

The note read, “One of our crew tracking-related tools was affected and [was] unable to effectively process the unprecedented number of changes triggered by the system shutdown.”

The note also said, “Our teams have been working around the clock to recover and restore full functionality.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg spoke to Delta Airlines’ CEO on Sunday about the problems the airline caused its customers and the steps the company would take to compensate them.

The Department of Transportation released a statement in which Buttigieg said that the airlines had been made clear that they had to promptly refund “consumers who chose not to rebook” and more. The statement also mentioned “free rebooking and timely reimbursements for food, and overnight hotel stays” and more for affected consumers.

CEO Bastian told Delta consumers affected by the disruptions that the airlines would “continue to offer meal vouchers, hotel accommodations and transportation where available.”

Delta Airlines will also provide “Delta SkyMiles and travel vouchers” to those affected by the cancellations “as a gesture of apology.”
