On Thursday, a death row inmate Lamont Hunter, who had spent nearly two decades in prison for the death of a 3-year-old boy named Trustin in 2006, walked out of an Ohio jail as a free man. The original ruling by a deputy coroner stated that Trustin had been sexually assaulted by Hunter and had died from blunt impact and shaking injuries to his head. However, Hunter maintained that the incident was an accident, claiming that Trustin fell down the stairs while he was doing laundry.
Initially convicted of aggravated murder, child endangerment, and rape, Hunter’s execution seemed imminent until the coroner reevaluated the case. The new examination of over 700 pages of records from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center led to a change in the cause of Trustin’s death from homicide to “undetermined.”
The updated report also revealed that the injuries believed to be from sexual assault were accidental, occurring during a hospital procedure. These findings made Hunter eligible for a new trial, but instead, he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. Consequently, the judge sentenced him to time served, and Hunter walked out of the Hamilton County jail as a free man.

Hunter expressed gratitude for being able to rebuild his life with his children. However, the plea deal also meant that he admitted to causing Trustin’s death, as stated by the Hamilton County Prosecutor’s Office. They explained that the confusion caused by the coroner’s change in opinion influenced their decision to accept the plea deal in the interest of justice.
Trustin’s family had differing reactions to Hunter’s release. Trustin’s mother forgave Hunter in a letter, believing that Trustin’s purpose on Earth was fulfilled through organ donation. In contrast, Trustin’s grandfather expressed anger, viewing Hunter as a rapist and murderer reintegrated into the Black community.
