World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev will compete at the Geneva Open following a layoff from hernia surgery.

Tournament organizers said Friday they extended a wild-card entry to Medvedev, who hasn’t played since losing in the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 Masters event in Miami in late March.

The clay-court Geneva Open runs from May 14-21 and is a tuneup for the French Open, which begins in Paris on May 22.

Defending champion Casper Ruud of Norway also is the Geneva Open field.

Medvedev, 26, announced on April 2 that he would take time off for the surgery.

“The last months I have been playing with a small hernia. Together with my team I have decided to have a small procedure done to fix the problem,” he posted on social media then. “I will likely be out for the next 1 — 2 months and will work hard to be back on court soon. Thanks for all the support.”

The Russian has 13 career victories, but none of them on clay. Known for his play on hard courts, the 2021 U.S. Open champion has a 15-21 career record on clay.

Currently, Medvedev and fellow Russians will not be allowed to play at Wimbledon because of their country’s invasion of Ukraine, as decided by the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
