Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is raising funds for Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran from New York City who is facing criminal charges in the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless man. According to witnesses and prosecutors, Neely had been causing disturbances and making threats on the subway. 24-year-old Penny was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court and charged with second-degree manslaughter. His defense attorneys argue that he acted in self-defense and to protect other passengers.
Governor DeSantis shared a fundraiser for Penny’s legal defense, referring to him as a “Good Samaritan” and disapproving Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as a “pro-criminal” prosecutor funded by George Soros. DeSantis expressed support for individuals like Penny and called for opposing the “pro-criminal agenda” of left-leaning prosecutors. The fundraiser, set up by Raiser & Kenniff, P.C., aims to cover Penny’s legal fees and potential civil lawsuits. Excess funds, if any, would be donated to a mental health advocacy program.

As of the time of publication, the GiveSendGo campaign has raised over $853,000 from more than 18,000 donors. On May 1, Penny intervened when Neely, who was allegedly threatening passengers and experiencing a mental episode, became confrontational on a subway train. Penny restrained Neely in a chokehold, resulting in Neely’s death from neck compression, as determined by the city’s medical examiner.
According to reports, Neely was an impersonator, had fallen on hard things recently and was suffering from schizophrenia. While some people protested his death, others hailed Penny as a hero. According to his attorneys, he was acting in self-defense. Neely was not hurting anyone, according to the family’s solicitors, and did not deserve to die.
Governor DeSantis received a mixed response for supporting Penny, with some criticizing him for endorsing vigilantism and others seeing it as a strong political move. It was suggested that DeSantis’s involvement in this case could be a strategic step toward a potential presidential run in 2024 or 2028. Meanwhile, DeSantis planned to engage in political activities in Iowa, attending a congressman’s annual picnic and an Iowa Republican Party fundraiser.
Prosecutors have noted that Penny has cooperated fully with the police and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He was released on a $100,000 bond, approved by prosecutors and secured by a bondsman. If convicted, Penny could face a prison sentence ranging from five to fifteen years. His next court appearance is scheduled for July.
