As the four-week-old Israel-Hamas war rages on, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned on Friday that his formidable militia is already fighting Israel in unprecedented cross-border combat along the Lebanon-Israel border, and he promised to escalate the situation even further.
During his first televised speech since the war started on October 7, when Palestinian terrorists launched their murderous raid into southern Israel, Nasrallah refrained from declaring that his Lebanese force would completely join the fight.
Nasrallah added that despite American warnings to stay out of the most recent conflict, Hezbollah, an ally of Gaza’s Islamist Hamas rulers, is not intimidated. The speaker made reference to the American warships stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, stating that they “will not scare us.” Hezbollah is prepared for all options, Nasrallah warned, “and we can resort to them at any time.” The fighting on the Lebanon-Israel border would “not be limited” to the scale seen until now, he added.
The U.S.’s staunch support of Israel’s shelling of Gaza, which has killed over 9,000 people, the most of them civilians, has drawn criticism from Nasrallah. Though they have been advocating more openly in recent days for the protection of Gaza’s civilian population, American officials have not yet demanded a cease-fire.
Israel estimates that Hezbollah possesses over 150,000 rockets and missiles, along with drones and surface-to-air and surface-to-sea missiles, directed towards Israel, making it the most immediate and significant threat it faces from the Iran-backed Shiite militant group in Lebanon.

A full-scale fight, however, would also come at a high cost to Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war that ended in a draw with Israel in 2006, not before Israeli bombing destroyed large areas of southern Lebanon, the eastern Bekaa Valley, and the southern suburbs of Beirut.
On October 21st, President Biden made this statement: “The United States remains committed to ensuring that civilians in Gaza will continue to have access to food, water, medical care, and other assistance, without diversion by Hamas. We will continue to work with all parties to keep the Rafah crossing in operation to enable the continued movement of aid that is imperative to the welfare of the people of Gaza and to continue working to protect civilians, consistent with obligations under international humanitarian law.
We also continue to work around the clock, in partnership with Egypt and Israel, to facilitate the ability of U.S. citizens and their immediate family members to exit Gaza safely and travel via Egypt to their final destinations.”
