The meal delivery service Daily Harvest revealed on Tuesday that it has discovered the ingredient thought to be the source of the strange disease experienced by hundreds of consumers, weeks after voluntarily recalling its French Lentil and Leek Crumbles. Many were sent to the hospital who had to have gallbladder surgery and had suffered liver dysfunction after eating the meal.
Rachel Drori, the creator and CEO of Daily Harvest, stated in a blog post for the firm on Tuesday afternoon, “At this moment, we have identified tara flour as the source of the issue.” The seeds of the South American-native tara tree are used to make tara flour. Drori continued, “This was the first and only time we’ve ever used tara flour, which was previously used as a plant-based source of protein in the North American market. Our investigative team will keep collaborating with the US Food and Drug Administration, the manufacturer of tara flour, and others to assist identify the precise cause of people’s illnesses.
Drori added, “We are no longer procuring from this producer who does not give any ingredients for our 140+ other items,” while reiterating that the business only used tara flour in its French Lentil and Leek Crumbles. In its blog post on Tuesday, the business did not immediately identify the tara flour manufacturer.
Daily Harvest used social media influencers help with its promotion. The business announced in November of last year that it had received Series D capital, valued at over $1 billion.
