DA drops firearm enhancement charges, giving Alec Baldwin a victory in the “Rust” deadly shooting case. In connection with the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” in October 2021, the Santa Fe District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that it is dropping the gun enhancement charge against Alec Baldwin.
If found guilty, the charge would have resulted in a five-year prison sentence. The charge was also dismissed against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, an armorer who is accused of the same involuntary manslaughter as Baldwin.
Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said in a statement, “In order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and the special prosecutor have removed the firearm enhancement to the involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the ‘Rust’ film set.” “The prosecution’s priority is securing justice, not securing billable hours for big-city attorneys.”
Baldwin would have been sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison if found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and firearms enhancement charges.
